On June 12, an Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) Summit was held in Asia (Beijing) for the first time since OPNFV’s formation in 2014. I recently returned from this conference, an event that further emphasized both the global recognition and advancements of OPNFV technology and its progression towards large scale commercial deployments. I recently returned from 5G World held in London at the ExCeL from June 13 to June 17. Throughout the show, there was a lot of spirited discussion around 5G architecture, including the various options for splits being defined in 3GPP, the Standalone Mode and Non-Standalone Mode implementation, as well as deployment considerations around performance and latency. Many of the panel sessions focused on the principles and tradeoffs that Communications Service Providers (CSPs) face as they seek to build their next generation software-centric networks with open source technology. The CG-OpenRack-19 specification was put under the spotlight at last week’s Open Compute Project (OCP) Telco Workshop, which served as a lead-in session to the Light Reading Big Communications Event. Along with AT&T’s Tom Anschutz, I had the opportunity to lead the discussion at this workshop and educate attendees about the benefits that an open hardware solution brings to the telco industry. While Radisys has seen growing traction for OCP-based hardware, about half of the audience was new to the concept. Learn More »

I just returned from last week’s Open Networking Summit, which over the past six years has grown into the industry’s largest open networking and orchestration event in the world. I’m not surprised by this growth. During that same time period, the telecom industry has made a major shift as communications service providers (CSPs) have embraced SDN and NFV architectures and are turning to open source hardware and software solutions to build the networks of the future. The wireless data traffic explosion on the network has caused service providers to re-evaluate their existing network infrastructure. This traditional Central Office infrastructure built with closed proprietary boxes has proven to be too rigid, limited by existing hardware investment and available spectrum. A progressive open source project of the ONOS partnership – CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter) – delivers a powerful new approach to transform service providers’ Central Offices into telco optimized data centers.
