A Video Optimization Gateway is designed for wireless operators to improve network efficiency, reduce bandwidth consumption, and improve end-user experience and satisfaction. It is deployed as a proxy service in the operator network where it minimizes video data rates, maximizes the number of simultaneous video users, and dynamically modifies video content flow (via transrating) to suit end-users’ prevailing network conditions.

Video optimization provides four key features:
- Application-aware bandwidth: apportions just the right amount of bandwidth to each end-user based on his / her specific needs. In contrast, non-video-aware methods simply deliver equal amounts of bandwidth to each mobile video subscriber which results in wasted bandwidth or poor quality.
- Client buffer management: estimates the video content in the end-user’s device buffer and sends just enough video data to enable continuous playback of the video instead of sending the entire video file.
- Content-aware bandwidth reduction: checks video frames and their properties and reduces only the parts of the content that an end-user would not notice, such as the static part of a video image from frame to frame.
- Network-aware adaption: shapes a video to match real-time radio access network (RAN) conditions using transrating, which adjusts bit rates to variable bandwidth conditions.
