Radisys’ New Carrier-Grade Network Appliance Platform Delivers Highly Flexible Solution for DPI and Networking Applications

Based on Intel architecture, the network appliance platform’s innovative design offers cutting-edge performance and serviceability.

HILLSBORO, OR, U.S. – February 16, 2012 – Radisys Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a leading provider of embedded wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced the addition of a carrier-grade network appliance platform based on server class Intel processors to its rich portfolio of telecom products. Radisys’ new RMS-220 is the first embedded solution that enables Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) to better address the unique requirements of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and networking applications by delivering a flexible design combined with powerful processing technology.

Network operators are turning to DPI-based and network monitoring applications such as policy enforcement, lawful intercept security, network probe and others in order to optimize bandwidth while monetizing their network. TEMs need breadth and scalability in their solution to address these requirements. RMS-220 further strengthens Radisys’ platform portfolio to deliver both, allowing TEMs the platform breadth and scalability to deploy across access, edge and core networks.

The Radisys RMS-220 provides TEMs with a 2U high, 20-inch deep form factor that delivers a unique combination of flexibility and serviceability. The innovative design includes front input/output (I/O) that also supports Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) guidelines and dual server class Intel processors.

“Current rackmount servers are very limited in their ability to address networking solution requirements. Field configurability of I/O, storage, and power supply without de-racking the system, and minimization of service downtime with hotswap capabilities can translate to significant reductions in operational cost and complexity. This coupled with high performance in a NEBS compliant short-depth form factor is very compelling,” said Anand Uppili, chief executive officer of Torres Networks, a leading policy control solutions provider.

Radisys’ carrier-grade network appliance platform is designed with both flexibility and serviceability in mind. The RMS-220 allows up to four front I/O modules, five front storage modules (HDD or SSD), redundant AC or DC power supply units (PSUs) and front serviceable fans that can be replaced in the field without de-racking the system. This simplifies SKU management and reduces supply chain complexity and cost.

Attributes such as NEBS compliance, 20-inch chassis depth, high-availability with hotswap, telco alarms and enhanced remote management capabilities make it an ideal solution for deployments in both telecom central office and data center environments. In addition, the RMS-220 offers cutting-edge performance for networking applications with dual, server class Intel processors, 16x high bandwidth memory slots and flexibility to augment performance with co-processors via PCI Express card slots.

“Radisys has more than 20 years of experience delivering innovative embedded products and a successful track record for providing our customers with the tools they need to develop competitive, differentiated solutions,” said Keate Despain, vice president and general manager, platforms, Radisys. “The RMS-220 network appliance platform is a strong complement to Radisys’ long-standing ATCA product portfolio, expanding on the same embedded software and engineering expertise. We truly provide our customers with a one-stop-shop for their telecom infrastructure needs.”

“Intel continues to make significant strides on multiple data plane vectors including raw throughput performance and performance per watt. The timing couldn’t be better for the telecom market to have an Intel architecture based Carrier Grade Network Appliance Platform that is designed and optimized for the rapidly growing DPI and networking applications segment. This is another example of a strong Intel partner ecosystem delivering innovative solutions with cutting-edge performance,” said Rose Schooler, general manager, Intelligent Systems Group, Intel Corporation.

About the network appliance platform

The RMS-220 network appliance platform can be easily configured to meet TEMs’ specific application and deployment needs. A broad range of configurations are available, including:

  • Front I/O port options including 32x 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 24x 10 Gigabit Ethernet and I/O bypass options
  • Up to 10TB of local storage
  • Broad range of co-processing options including NetLogic and Cavium processors

This new network appliance platform offers an ideal complement to Radisys’ ATCA product portfolio. In addition, consistent software and optimizations across Radisys ATCA and RMS-220 product lines help reduce development cost and time-to-market for solution providers that need high scalability.
