The AMC-7211 and AMC-7212 are a Single width, Mid-Size AMCs that provide up to 4 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces through SFP connectors supporting copper and optical interfaces. The hardware design incorporates state of the art packet processing technology from Cavium, OCTEON™ CN38xx/CN58xx. The OCTEON CN38xx/CN58xx processor is a multi-core processor with significant hardware acceleration engines for both packet and security processing. Leveraging the multi-core capabilities of the processor and its silicon based hardware acceleration, the AMC-7211/12 can handle full line rate processing for various packet processing functions including forwarding, load balancing, traffic management and IP Sec. This versatile module accelerates development time for multitude of network elements - Media Gateway, RNC, Security/Network Gateway, Edge Routers, Session Border Controllers, Intrusion Detection Systems, QoS/Policy Management servers, and more.
The AMC-7211/12 includes up to 1 GB of soldered down DDR2 memory and is designed to work in multitude of usage models. It is designed to support either front or rear I/O through build options. It includes PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to the carrier or back plane as appropriate. It can be used in a “self standing” mode where it powers up in a carrier module as a resource ready to receive and process traffic. Or it can be powered up through a management processor and act as an “off load engine” for another processor cluster. Alternatively, it can be used as a line card or resource module in a MicroTCA environment. For example, the AMC-7211/12 is designed to run in a MicroTCA shelf, on ATCA server blades with on-board AMC slots like the ATCA-4300/10 and on ATCA AMC-carrier blades like the RadiSys the ATCA-1200. The module is fully standards compliant with its onboard MMC controller and AMC management support such as hot-swap.
Software Support: The AMC-7211/12 comes complete with software development kits in the form of Linux compatible API’s. It supports carrier grade Linux from Windriver plus other Linux distributions can be supported upon request. The AMC software includes the necessary LSP for the Linux operating systems and blade management software. Optionally, data path software is also available.
The AMC specification requires every AMC to support a level of hardware management functionality – availability, type, thermal, etc. However, in a real network element design a significant higher level of FCAPS functionality is required by the way of heart beat, administration, software image management, file system management, etc. RadiSys provides much of this blade management functionality as part of its software for the AMC. This software will also be enhanced over time with updates and increased functionality.
The power of the OCTEON CN38xx/CN58xx is realized by utilizing the multi-core and optimizing the use of the hardware accelerators. While there are standard protocol stacks and support available either independently or as part of certain Linux distributions, they may not be optimized for the multi-core with hardware acceleration of the OCTEON™. The RadiSys solution optionally includes support for many of these data path software capabilities which are optimized for the AMC and its processor. Such optimized, production ready code accelerates product development significantly. This data path software includes IPV4/IPV6 forwarding, Security (IP Sec, SSL), Traffic Management and IP Filtering. Future releases will include more protocol processing (MPLS, GTP, RTP, …) and Load balancing.
The AMC-7211/12 meets Single Mid-Size AMC.0, AMC.1 and AMC.2 specifications, with a x4 PCI-Express (PCI-E) lanes to ports 4-7 and four GE Ethernet links to ports 0, 1, 8 and 9. The AMC is designed to support separate data and control paths to the AMC fabric if preferred.
The AMC-7212 is also available as a complete integrated line card solution as part of the ATCA-7200 family. The ATCA-72xx comprises the ATCA-1200 AMC carrier card and up to 4 AMC-7212 Single Mid-Size AMCs complete with data path and management control software to provide a complete line card solution.
